Anyone Successfully Trained Their Parrot with Positive Reinforcement?

Training a parrot can sometimes feel as tricky as teaching a cat to play fetch! I live in Seattle and have been trying out positive reinforcement to teach my parrot, Kiwi, some new tricks. While he’s fantastic at mimicking sounds, following commands has proven to be more challenging.

I’ve noticed that using treats is much more effective than just giving praise, especially since parrots really respond to food. I’m curious if anyone else has found different methods or specific treats that motivate their birds. What training techniques have worked for you? Any funny stories from your training sessions?

I’ve had a similar experience with my parrot, Charlie. He goes crazy for sunflower seeds, and they seem to work wonders! We’ve also had some hilarious fails; once he mistook my phone for a toy and wouldn’t give it back until I offered him a piece of banana. What has Kiwi’s best trick been so far?

I found that using varied treats helped a ton! My parrot loved sunflower seeds for some tricks but would totally ignore the pellets. Also, timing is key; rewarding immediately after they do the right thing makes a big difference. Have you tried using different treats for different commands?
