Beginner's Guide to Cleaning Your Betta Fish Tank

Cleaning your betta fish tank might feel overwhelming at first, but it’s quite manageable! As someone who’s volunteered with animal rescues, I’ve realized that maintaining a clean environment is essential for keeping your fish happy and healthy. A tidy tank not only benefits your betta but also enhances your enjoyment while watching them swim.

To start, gather your cleaning supplies: a siphon or gravel vacuum, a clean bucket, and water conditioner. Begin by removing about 25-50% of the water from the tank. Use the siphon to gently vacuum the substrate, which helps eliminate leftover food and waste. Remember to be gentle to avoid stressing your betta during this process.

Once you’ve removed the water and cleaned the substrate, it’s time to refill the tank. Always use conditioned water to ensure it’s safe for your fish. Before adding the new water, check the temperature to prevent sudden changes that could stress your betta. Finally, give any decorations or plants a light cleaning without harsh chemicals to keep everything safe and natural.
