Best Fish Options for a 3-Gallon Tank

Choosing fish for a small aquarium can be quite the challenge, especially for a 3-gallon tank. Finding species that can thrive in limited space is essential for ensuring their health and well-being. What types of fish have others successfully kept in such a compact setup?

I’ve heard that bettas and endler’s livebearers are great choices, but I’m open to suggestions for other species. How about incorporating shrimp or snails to enhance the tank’s ecosystem? I’d love to hear from anyone who has experience with a 3-gallon aquarium—what worked well for you, what didn’t, and any tips for maintaining a balanced and happy tank?

For a 3-gallon tank, I’ve had good luck with a couple of ghost or cherry shrimp. They’re super fun to watch and help keep the tank clean too. Just make sure you have plenty of hiding spots for them! If you want fish, maybe try a single betta or a few tiny tetras, but keep an eye on water quality since it’s a smaller space.

I’ve had a 3-gallon for a while and bettas are definitely solid, but I’ve also kept a few neon tetras without issues. Just be careful about overstocking. Shrimp can be cool too; my cherry shrimp do great in there! Just make sure your water parameters are stable.
