Can You Train an Outdoor Cat to Use a Litter Box?

I’ve noticed that outdoor cats can be quite set in their ways when it comes to bathroom habits. A friend of mine has been trying to get her cat, who’s used to roaming outside, to start using a litter box indoors, but she hasn’t had much luck. This makes me wonder if it’s really possible to teach an outdoor cat to adapt to a litter box.

Cats have their own preferences for where they do their business, especially if they’re accustomed to nature. I can imagine it’s a bit of a struggle to balance their instincts with the need for indoor sanitation. Have any of you managed to train an outdoor cat to use a litter box? What techniques did you find effective, and how long did it take? I’d love to hear your stories and any tips you might have!

Got a former outdoor cat who now uses a litter box, but it took a solid month of patience. I started by placing the box outside and gradually moved it closer to the door, then finally inside. They seem to need that gradual shift to adjust, but it can totally work!

I had a similar situation with my outdoor cat. What worked for me was getting a litter box with some dirt mixed in to mimic the outdoors. It took a few weeks, but after some patience and using treats as encouragement, he finally started using it regularly. Definitely a process, but it can happen!
