Choosing the Right Substrate for Reptiles: What Works Best?

Finding the right substrate for reptiles can feel overwhelming, especially with so many choices out there. Since I recently moved to a pet-friendly neighborhood in Toronto, I’ve been rethinking the materials I use to ensure they’re safe and help create a healthy environment for my pets. I’ve come across everything from coconut fiber to paper towels, but it’s tough to decide, especially when considering humidity levels and ease of cleaning.

For my gecko, I want to set up a comfortable habitat, but I’m torn between sticking with traditional substrates or experimenting with something new. I’ve heard that some substrates can be harmful if ingested, while others may be difficult to maintain. Have any of you navigated this recently? What substrate did you end up choosing, and what factors influenced your decision? Any tips would be really helpful!

I recently switched my snake’s substrate from aspen to coconut fiber, and it’s been way better for humidity control. It keeps things moist without the mess of loose substrate, plus it looks nice. Definitely something to consider if you’re looking for a healthier setup!
