How is grooming for senior pets different from younger ones?

I recently adopted an older dog, and I’ve noticed that his grooming needs are quite different from my younger pets. He has a lot of mats in his fur and seems to tire out much faster during bath time. I want to ensure I’m meeting his needs, but I’m unsure what changes I should make to his grooming routine.

For those of you with senior pets, what grooming techniques or products have you found to be particularly useful? Also, what signs should I look for to know if he’s feeling stressed or uncomfortable during grooming? I really want to keep this process gentle and stress-free for him. Any tips or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve found that using a slicker brush helps a lot with mats, but you definitely need to take breaks since older pets can get tired more easily. Also, watch for panting or trying to move away—those are usually signs he needs a little more time to rest. It’s great that you’re being so mindful of his comfort!

Grooming a senior pet can definitely be a different ball game! I found using a slicker brush is great for removing mats without pulling too hard, and doing shorter sessions can really help. Just watch for signs like panting, stiffening, or wanting to move away—those are usually good indicators they need a break.
