How many litter boxes are ideal for a cat in a multi-pet home?

I recently adopted a cat and I’m trying to set up the best environment for her at home. We already have a dog, and I want to ensure the cat has her own space and feels comfortable. I’ve come across the general advice that you should have one more litter box than the number of cats, but does this rule still apply when you have multiple pets?

My roommates also love animals, and we’re aiming for a peaceful cohabitation between our pets. I’m a bit worried about how our dog might react to the litter boxes being around. Do you think having multiple boxes would help with that? Also, are there particular spots in the house that work better for placing the boxes?

I’d love to hear how others handle litter boxes in similar situations. What’s your experience with the number of boxes and where you’ve placed them?

Just putting out there that I’ve found having two boxes works well even with just one cat in a multi-pet home. It gives them options and keeps things cleaner. For placement, I’ve had luck with putting one in a quiet corner and another away from high traffic areas, but nowhere too hidden—you don’t want them to feel trapped.

I’ve got a cat and a dog too, and I definitely found that having two litter boxes worked better for us. The dog kind of ignored them once they got set up out of the way, like in a quiet corner or bathroom. Just make sure the boxes are not in places where the dog hangs out too much. It really helped keep the peace!
