How to Prepare Driftwood for Your Aquarium

Adding driftwood to your aquarium can create a beautiful and natural environment for your fish, but it’s important to prepare it properly. Start by choosing the right type of driftwood; Malaysian and spider wood are excellent options. Once you have your piece, give it a thorough cleaning. Rinse it under running water to remove any dirt, and consider using a soft brush to clean any hard-to-reach areas.

After cleaning, the next step is soaking the driftwood. This process helps to eliminate tannins that can discolor your water and may affect pH levels. Depending on the size of the wood, soaking can take a few days to a couple of weeks. To speed things up, you can boil the driftwood in water for about an hour, which also helps eliminate any pests or bacteria.

Once the driftwood is fully soaked, it’s ready for your tank! Make sure to secure it well to prevent it from floating, and remember that many fish love to hide in the branches. Keep an eye on your water parameters after introducing the driftwood to maintain a stable environment. Have you added driftwood to your aquarium before?
