Is Free Play Safe for Reptiles in a New Home?

Moving to a pet-friendly neighborhood is exciting, but it also introduces new challenges, especially for our reptiles. Allowing them to have some free playtime around the house raises some concerns about their safety in this unfamiliar environment. There are so many potential hazards, like small gaps or objects that weren’t an issue in our previous home.

For those who have experience relocating with reptiles, how did you manage their free play in a new space? What safety precautions did you put in place? Any tips for ensuring a smooth transition while giving them the chance to explore would be really helpful!

Make sure to fully reptile-proof the area before letting them explore! Check for small gaps, wires, or anything they could ingest. You might also want to create a designated play zone with safe hiding spots and climbing areas to keep them engaged while keeping them secure.

I think it really depends on the species. Some reptiles can handle a little more free time than others. For instance, my bearded dragon loves to roam but I always make sure to block off areas with gaps to prevent escape. It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on their behavior during playtime; they might get stressed if they feel overwhelmed by the new space.
