Is Making DIY Cat Toys Worth the Effort?

I’ve been thinking about whether making DIY cat toys is really worth all the time and effort. My roommates and I treat our cat like family, often whipping up homemade treats and toys. However, it sometimes feels like a lot of work for just a few minutes of fun.

Recently, we crafted a feather wand using some materials we found around the house. Our cat loved it, but it made me wonder if store-bought toys might have been more durable or engaging. For those who have tried both DIY and store-bought options, do you find that making toys yourself adds more value for your pets?

How do you balance spending quality time with your pets versus the effort of creating these toys? Any amusing stories from your DIY toy-making adventures?

I’ve made a few DIY toys too, like the crinkle balls from old chip bags. My cat went nuts for them, but they fell apart pretty quickly. I think it can be fun to make them together, but yeah, some store-bought ones last way longer and keep them entertained more. It’s all about finding that balance!

I get what you mean about the effort vs. fun thing. I made a cardboard box maze once, and my cat was all over it for days. But honestly, I find that sometimes the simplest store-bought stuff keeps them entertained longer, like those crinkly balls. It’s hit or miss!
