What are the best fish for cleaning your tank?

Cleaning a fish tank can be quite a challenge, so it’s understandable that many of us are looking for fish that can help with that task. There are various species often touted as great tank cleaners, but it can be hard to sift through all the differing opinions out there. For those who have added cleaner fish to their tanks, what has worked best for you?

Options like algae eaters and certain catfish come to mind, but do they really make a noticeable difference? I’m also curious if they come with specific care requirements that could complicate things. Have you found any types of cleaner fish that improved your tank’s cleanliness? Any tips on how to care for them or ensure they get along with your other fish would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve had good luck with Otocinclus catfish for algae—they’re super small and chill with other fish. Just make sure you keep your water quality good and feed them a bit of blanched veggies too. They do love to be in groups, so a few together work best!

I’ve had good luck with otocinclus catfish for algae. They really help keep things tidy, but they need a well-established tank and some moss or algae to munch on. Have you tried them, or are you looking at something else?
