What does it mean when my fish stays at the top of the tank?

Lately, I’ve noticed my fish spending an unusual amount of time at the top of the tank. At first, I thought he might just be enjoying a better view, but after several days of this behavior, I’m starting to feel concerned. Could this indicate a more serious issue?

I’ve checked the water temperature and quality, and everything appears normal. He seems healthy otherwise, but I can’t help but wonder if he’s struggling with low oxygen levels or possibly looking for food. Has anyone else experienced this with their fish? What steps did you take to address it?

Any recommendations for figuring out whether this is a cause for concern or simply normal behavior for some fish would be greatly appreciated!

It could definitely be a sign of low oxygen levels, especially if it’s been going on for a while. I noticed something similar with my betta fish before I added a bubble filter; it helped a lot. Just keep an eye on him, and maybe try moving the tank decorations around to encourage some more swimming space.

My fish did the same thing, and it turned out to be an oxygen issue. I added a small aquarium air pump, and almost immediately he started swimming around more. If yours is just at the top all the time, it might be worth checking your filtration and maybe even adding some live plants to help with oxygen levels.
