What’s the Best Way to Acclimate New Fish to Your Tank?

Introducing new fish to your aquarium can be a stressful experience, especially when it comes to acclimating them properly. One common question is how long the fish should stay in the bag before being added to the tank. Recommendations seem to vary from 15 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on the species and water conditions.

Some members suggest floating the bag in the tank to help equalize the temperature, while others recommend gradually mixing tank water into the bag to ease the transition. It can be a bit overwhelming trying to figure out the best approach.

How do you acclimate your fish? Have you found a method that helps reduce stress for your new pets? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!

I usually float the bag for about 20-30 minutes, then I do a slow drip acclimation by adding small amounts of tank water to the bag every 10-15 minutes for at least an hour. It seems to help reduce stress and gets them used to the tank conditions better. Just make sure to watch for any signs of distress as you go!

I usually float the bag for about 30 minutes, then I slowly add tank water to the bag over an hour before releasing them. It seems to help keep them calm when they get into the new environment. Definitely worth trying if you haven’t already!
