What type of water is best for my fish tank?

Setting up a fish tank in my new apartment has been an exciting journey! I’ve always kept reptiles, but now I’m venturing into the world of fish, and I’m a little unsure about the water situation. Should I use tap water, distilled water, or maybe reverse osmosis (RO) water? I know each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, and I want to create the best environment for my fish.

I’ve heard that tap water can contain chemicals like chlorine, which could be harmful to fish. Is this really a major concern? Some people recommend using a water conditioner to treat tap water, while others prefer the purity of distilled water. If anyone has experimented with different water types in their tanks, I’d love to hear what worked best for you! Also, how do you balance the minerals in the water? Looking forward to your thoughts!

I’ve used tap water with a good conditioner and it worked fine for my freshwater tank. Just check your city’s water report for chlorine levels! If you want to go the RO route, it can be great for sensitive species, but you’ll need to remineralize it. Have you thought about what types of fish you’re planning to keep?

I just started a fish tank too! I used tap water but treated it with a conditioner to remove chlorine and everything’s been great so far. Distilled water sounds super pure but I’ve read it might lack minerals your fish need, so you might have to add some back in. Balancing minerals seems tricky, but I’ve just been keeping an eye on my water tests and adjusting as needed. Good luck!
