Why does my fish stay near the top of the tank?

It can be worrying when you notice your fish hovering at the surface of the tank. Even with good tank maintenance, this behavior might raise some questions. A friend faced a similar situation with their betta, which got me thinking about why fish might prefer the upper layers of the water.

One common reason could be that the fish is looking for more oxygen. If the water quality isn’t great or there’s insufficient surface agitation, they may find it easier to breathe closer to the top. Additionally, some fish simply enjoy the upper levels, and other factors like temperature and tank mates can play a role in their behavior.

Has anyone else noticed this with their fish? What steps did you take to address it? I’d love to hear your experiences and any solutions you found!

I’ve seen this with my guppies before. When they hung out at the top, I realized the filter wasn’t working well enough for surface agitation. After cleaning the filter and adding an air stone, they spread out more. Definitely worth checking water quality and flow!

Yeah, I’ve seen that too! My goldfish hangs out at the top all the time, but I think it’s just his chill spot. I added a bubbler to get more oxygen, and it seems to help a bit, but he’s still a surface dweller. Have you tried checking the water parameters? That might give you some clues.
